Insurgency: Nigerian physicians hold conference on family dislocation, others

Due to disruption and dislocation in family and community dynamics by kidnappings and insurgency The Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON)  will Thursday hold a conference in Abuja on 'Civil unrest and emerging health challenges in Nigeria.'

Commenting on the event, the National President of Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) Dr. Akin Moses described Nigeria as a developing country which is grappling with prevalence of communicable diseases, non communicable diseases, increasing mental health issues and accidents.

Dr. Akin, who made this statement during the press conference for the 18th Annual general meeting & Scientific conference of the society of Family Physicians of Nigeria, explained that the four-pronged issues added with the percentage of the ageing population stresses the health care system at the community level.

He said to enable the country provide good quality healthcare at affordable cost health system must have it three levels of care function optimally adding that family physicians must function at the "primary, secondary and tertiary level of health care to provide preventive , health promotion, curative, palliative and rehabilitative health care and have the capacity to improve health indices."

Dr. Akin further stated that "We shall continue to collaborate and partner with the government and relevant agencies in mitigating the effects of civil unrest" while "medical officers would be encouraged to have a minimum of a diploma in family medicine." Dr. Akin emphasized.

He called on federal ministry of health to support faith-based hospitals that provide postgraduate residency training  in Family medicine.

Former Governor of Rivers state Peter Odili is expected to chair the occasion while  Governor of Kaduna state Nasir El-rufai will be the key note speaker.

SOFPON is the academic body of Fellows, Resident Doctors and Postgraduate Diplomates of the faculty of Family Medicine, National postgraduate medical college of Nigeria and the West African college of Physicians.
